No Loom, No Dye — Only the Hand
Every mat is sourced in person and judged by hand. Soufiane will never sell a Tuareg mat that is not authentic, or that is not in good condition — that promise is the whole business, and it is why people come back.
Hand-plaited Tuareg mats from the Sahara
Tuareg mats are hand-woven by skilled artisans in the Morocco Atlas, traditionally made from reed, palm, and camel leather. Long practiced by the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara, the craft turns local plant fibre into a flat, durable weave, bound at the edges with strips of undyed leather. Each mat carries a graphic vocabulary of stepped crosses, diamonds and medallions worked directly into the plaiting, so no dye and no loom are needed — only the reed, the hand, and a pattern passed down through generations.
At Soufiane Zarib, every Tuareg mat is chosen individually in Marrakech for its motif, its proportions and the quality of its plaiting. Sizes and patterns are one of a kind, in keeping with a craft made by hand rather than to a fixed template. Reach out for pricing and availability, and we'll share full condition notes for the piece you have in mind.
