Beni rugs — known in Morocco as Beni Ourain rugs — are hand-knotted in the Middle Atlas by Berber artisans whose families have worked the same vertical looms for generations. Every carpet in this collection is made from 100% natural Atlas Mountain wool, sheared in spring, washed in river water and spun by hand before a single knot is tied. Nothing is bleached, nothing is machine-made, and no synthetic fibre ever touches the loom.

What sets an authentic Beni Ourain rug apart is its restraint. The field is left the natural ivory of undyed highland fleece, and across it the weaver draws a loose lattice of charcoal diamonds — a lozenge language that records births, journeys and protection, remembered rather than drawn. Because the pattern lives in the weaver’s memory, no two hand-knotted Moroccan rugs are ever identical, and the small irregularities that run along the selvedge are the signature of a human hand rather than a fault.

Soufiane Zarib has dealt in Moroccan rugs for over twenty years, from a boutique in the medina of Marrakech at Dar el Bacha. Born into a family of rug dealers, he selects every piece himself and will not sell a rug that is not authentic or not in good condition. That standard is why the collection runs deep in vintage Berber designs as well as new work, and why each rug is offered with its full history rather than a label.

A Beni Ourain carpet is a long-lived object. The high lanolin content of Atlas Mountain wool makes it naturally resistant to dirt and moisture, while the dense Berber knot lets it absorb decades of use and simply soften with age.
